Overview

Job Summary

To be part of the Ophthalmic Imaging team and deliver education, training and ophthalmic imaging, at Cheltenham, Gloucester and Community hospitals. The post holder will be responsible for implementing education, training and development strategies and delivery throughout Ophthalmic Imaging, with expert knowledge, for all staff groups - including Ophthalmic Imagers and university students. The post holder must ensure the provision of education and training support is in-line with the needs across all clinical areas and the Ophthalmic Imaging qualification criteria.

They will need to identify educational/developmental needs in clinical practice and work with the Education Team and MDT to provide responsive support. The post holder will undertake routine clinical duties and education/training duties to maintain service quality.

Job responsibilities
  • Lead in identifying and progressing their own professional development within the role.
  • Identify education/developmental needs in clinical practice and provide responsive support and solutions to these needs, including evaluation of different options.
  • Manage the developing role of the practitioner by contributing to change processes through leadership, research, education, training and clinical practice.
  • Bring and implement relevant national information, policies, guidelines and procedure changes that may impact service provision.
  • Develop and deliver specific and relevant teaching programmes for all Ophthalmic Imaging practitioners and students, ensuring staff are equipped to deliver service needs.
  • Review and evaluate teaching programmes, adjusting them as required, and lead on the development of new programmes when a need is identified.
  • Develop and distribute educational material to support staff in practice.
  • Manage educational opportunities within clinical areas for placement students, supporting their learning and mentoring needs as identified alongside the curriculum.
  • Contribute to clinical governance outcomes.
  • Work with service leaders and Education to ensure service provisions are patient-centred, clinically effective and provide value for money.
  • Ensure standards for practice and placement opportunities for students are enhanced in the clinical field.
  • Develop and use personal clinical knowledge and skills to promote excellence in Ophthalmic Imaging and educate learners.
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and patients, in distressing and sensitive circumstances, with empathy and professionalism.
  • Deliver effective and relevant one-to-one patient education to encourage effective appointment management and reduce risks of eye damage.
  • Competence in image and data handling, including capture, upload and retrieval, to ensure timely image review as appropriate.
  • Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and maintain accurate patient records.
Person Specification

Essential

  • Qualifications
    • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject or equivalent experience in an ophthalmic imaging role
    • Post-Graduate Qualification in OCT Capture & Interpretation
  • Experience:

    Extensive experience in an Ophthalmic Imaging clinic or placement setting
  • Personal Attributes:
    Ability to work autonomously and unsupervised in clinical and non-clinical settings
  • Knowledge:
    Competence in digital ophthalmic imaging modalities including OCT, OCT-A, FFA, ICG, retinal photography & cSLO imaging
  • Knowledge:
    Ability to use independently varied Ophthalmic Imaging equipment (Topcon, Zeiss, Heidelberg) to obtain digital imaging for record-keeping, assessment, diagnosis and management of retinal/ocular pathologies
  • Personal Attributes:
    Detailed knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, imaging technical operations, imaging software and instruments to enable accurate image capture and data management
