Paediatric Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Band 6

Provide specialist, evidence‑based nursing care for children and young people with oncological or haematological conditions. Liaise and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, families and the community to deliver a seamless, autonomous service while meeting the physical, psychological, spiritual, social and financial needs of patients and their families.

Main duties of the job
  • Perform comprehensive assessment of children/young people with oncology conditions using advanced skills and expert knowledge.
  • Analyse and interpret clinical data to guide interventions, including managing blood results for maintenance chemotherapy within protocol guidelines.
  • Actively participate with the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) team and the wider oncology MDT to support patient care.
  • Support families through diagnosis, active treatment, end‑of‑treatment, follow‑up care and palliative support, respecting cognitive, developmental and ethnic needs.
  • Provide expert information, advice, teaching and support to professional and voluntary sector colleagues.
  • Serve as a local and regional resource for the Paediatric oncology nursing team.
  • Adapt to service improvement, deputise for the Lead Paediatric Oncology/Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist, and comply with all trust policies and guidelines.
Job responsibilities
1. Clinical responsibilities / Key responsibilities
  • Assess physical, psychological and emotional needs of children/young people with oncology conditions and instigate therapeutic treatments based on best evidence.
  • Manage caseload, analysing data and interpreting results to implement appropriate actions for care and treatment.
  • Participate with CNS and oncology MDT to support patient care.
  • Support families through all stages of care with palliative support when needed.
  • Provide evidence‑based practice evaluation, teaching and support for professionals and voluntary sector colleagues.
  • Act as a resource for the Paediatric oncology nursing team locally and regionally.
  • Adapt to service improvement, deputise in the absence of the Lead Paediatric Oncology/Haematology CNS, and comply with policies (e.g., medication administration, infection control).
  • Identify, manage and refer any safeguarding assessment following trust policies.
2. Professional development, education and training
  • Educate and advise families on management of their condition using up‑to‑date information and resources.
  • Facilitate education and training for nursing, health care professionals, education and voluntary sector individuals.
  • Organise and develop tailored health care education packages for children, young people and their families/care‑givers in settings such as primary care, nurseries, schools and respite facilities.
3. Planning and organisation
  • Work independently to provide care to patients in the community and visit a variety of settings.
  • Efficiently manage own time to complete allocated tasks.
4. Research and development
  • Contribute to ensuring policies and guidelines align with national and international standards and current research.
  • Promote audits or research within the clinical area, the trust, or the wider regional cancer network.
5. Communications and working relationships
  • Show excellent communication skills as an autonomous practitioner within the Trust.
  • Act as a local link to regional networks, primary care trusts, community teams and the voluntary sector.
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, families and other professionals with empathy and reassurance.
  • Use various methods to share key information, such as an electronic prescribing system, phone calls, text messages and e‑mail.
  • Maintain accurate and contemporaneous multi‑professional records.
6. Other
  • Require ability to travel around the county for community visits.
7. General working conditions
  • Work with patients and families who have a life‑limiting prognosis, including palliative and bereavement support.
  • Respond to concerns and questions from anxious or distressed individuals regarding their condition and treatment.
