Overview

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Clinical Vascular Scientist (Band
7) to join the Vascular Laboratories. The closing date is 05 July 2026. This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week, fixed-term 12-month contract with potential progression to a substantive post. The department operates Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, with flexible working hours possible. The role requires work across Cheltenham General and Gloucester Royal Hospitals with a regular free shuttle service between sites.

About us

The Vascular Laboratory team collaborates with eight Vascular Consultants, Consultant Radiologists, Vascular Access Nurse Specialists, Vascular Surgical Care Practitioners, and Vascular Nurse Specialists as part of a multidisciplinary team in the Department of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. The Vascular Laboratories are spacious, air-conditioned rooms equipped with five Philips EPIQ 7 ultrasound machines, one Philips EPIQ 5 machine, and Philips Inno Site ultrasound machines.

We use an electronic reporting system along with CRIS/PACS.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will deliver safe, effective, and timely diagnostic vascular ultrasound services within the Gloucestershire and Swindon Vascular Network. This includes operating complex imaging equipment for direct patient assessment, managing daily workloads, reporting results to referring clinicians, and advising patients on appropriate actions. The role includes providing scientific and clinical support in vascular ultrasound and participating in research and development, teaching, and training of staff and students.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • A recognised degree in life or medical sciences
  • MSc in life or medical sciences (or working towards it)
  • Active HCPC registration
  • CSVS or equivalent Vascular Ultrasound qualification (AVS)
Experience
  • Competent in basic vascular ultrasound examinations (extracranial carotid arteries, upper and lower limb arterial and venous assessments, post-EVAR aorto-iliac examinations)
  • Substantial experience in vascular ultrasound
  • Experience in extended practice (e.g., AVF assessment, iliac vein stent assessment, contrast ultrasound)
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Specialised knowledge of vascular ultrasound procedures and practices
  • Advanced knowledge of vascular anatomy and physiology, and understanding of vascular surgical treatment options
  • Proven knowledge of haemodynamics
  • Knowledge of quality assurance in vascular ultrasound services
  • Ongoing CPD evidence
  • Effective communication and ability to prioritise and manage own work
  • Knowledge of hospital imaging and electronic patient management systems
