Anaesthetics, Pre-operative Assessment and Pain Services underpin the Trust's elective, emergency and peri-operative pathways, playing a central role in patient safety, theatre productivity, peri-operative optimisation and recovery.
The Clinical Lead role provides senior clinical leadership within Anaesthetics Services, working in close partnership with the Specialty Director, General Manager, Matrons and multidisciplinary teams to support safe, effective and sustainable service delivery across the Trust.

The Clinical Lead provides senior clinical, professional and operational leadership for Anaesthetics, pre-operative and Pain Services, supporting the Specialty Director in the delivery and development of the service.
The post holder will:
- Provide visible, day‑to‑day clinical leadership at the point of care
- Support service delivery, escalation and peri‑operative flow
- Contribute to workforce leadership, including supporting job planning activity
- Lead and support clinical governance, quality and improvement activity
The Clinical Lead will deputise for the Specialty Director when required, ensuring continuity of clinical and operational leadership.

Job responsibilitiesKey Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership and Service Delivery
- Provide senior clinical leadership across anaesthetic, peri‑operative and pain services
- Support safe clinical decision‑making, theatre efficiency and escalation processes
- Act as a senior clinical point of contact for complex or high‑risk clinical issues
- Promote high standards of anaesthetic and pain practice in line with national guidance and Trust policy
Support to the Specialty Director
- Act as nominated deputy to the Specialty Director during periods of absence
- Support delivery of the specialty strategy through clinical leadership and influence
- Assist the Specialty Director with clinical and operational priorities as required
Medical Workforce Leadership and Job Planning
- Provide professional leadership and support to the anaesthetic and pain medical workforce
- Support the Specialty Director in job planning processes, including preparation, clinical input and specialty engagement
- Contribute to discussions on workforce configuration, sustainability and service delivery
- Support appraisal and professional development activity (without holding overall accountability)
Quality, Safety and Improvement
- Provide senior clinical leadership for governance, quality and patient safety
- Support audit, learning from incidents, morbidity review and service evaluation
- Use clinical insight and data to identify opportunities for service improvement
- Work with the Trust Quality Academy to embed continuous improvement
