Ward Sister / Charge Nurse - Ward 5b (Band 6, 29.25 hours a week)We are looking for a band 6 registered nurse to join our innovative team on ward 5b where we care for patients requiring surgical assessment.
Main duties of the job- Lead and prioritise patient care for a group of patients.
- Support and supervise junior staff and students, acting as a role model.
- Communicate effectively, with excellent time‑management skills.
- Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Act with professionalism, integrity and adhere to legal frameworks.
- Conduct oneself as a professional role model.
- Use professional, ethical, and legal frameworks to maintain and improve standards.
- Ensure clear communication and partnership with other professionals, service users, carers and families.
- Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care in accordance with UK law, the NMC code of conduct and Trust values.
- Deliver high‑quality essential care and complex care.
- Protect the public and act responsibly for safe, person‑centred, evidence‑based practice.
- Maintain dignity, wellbeing and communicate effectively.
- Promote health, prevent illness and seek opportunities to improve care.
- Manage patient caseload within the clinical area.
- Supervise and manage staff, contribute to planning, designing and improving services.
- Organise own time and that of non‑registered staff, students and other learners.
- Provide mentorship and support senior staff in management and supervision.
- Contribute to a good learning environment as a mentor/assessor.
- Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Adult Nurse.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development through portfolio, revalidation and lifelong learning.
- Experience working in an acute clinical environment.
- Previous experience in elective GI or emergency surgery.
- Leadership experience in the workplace.
- Interest in teaching and imparting knowledge.
- Self‑motivated, able to work under own initiative, prioritise workload.
- Resilient, able to manage complexity and change.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Able to use clinical reasoning to assess, diagnose, plan and offer treatment options.
- Acts as a role model, leading by example, supervising non‑registered and less‑experienced staff.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and a Disclosure and Barring Service check is required.
Salary: £39,959 to £48,117 per year (pro rata if part‑time).
