Opportunity

A rare and exciting opportunity for a Learning Disability Nurse. This role is for a Community Learning Disability Nurse within Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust. The position is Band 6, but experienced Band 5 nurses who want to develop skills are also welcome.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work independently to deliver a safe, effective service for people with learning disabilities and additional complex needs such as mental health, epilepsy and dementia.
  • Manage a complex, high-risk caseload across a large geographical area.
  • Link with other professionals and agencies to achieve positive outcomes for service users.
  • Work flexibly, using reasonable adjustments to support clients, families and carers.
  • Ensure all systems and processes are followed in accordance with Trust objectives.
  • Provide assessment and implementation of evidence-based interventions for people with learning disabilities and associated needs.
  • Supervise, mentor and teach qualified and unqualified staff, including students.
  • Coordinate care for a specified group of service users.
  • Support Clinical Governance initiatives at team and service level.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities (RNLD).
  • Evidence of continued professional development.
  • Formal teaching and assessing course (FLAP / FLIP) – essential.
  • Registration as a non‑medical prescriber with the NMC, having undertaken the required Level 3 training.
  • Formal post‑registration learning and post‑qualification experience in learning disabilities or a related area, some of which should have been in a community setting.
  • Extensive experience of first-line assessments, including risk assessment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Experience collaborating with other agencies, including the voluntary sector.
  • Previous autonomous working experience.
  • Demonstrable skills in risk assessment and management.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based interventions for service users with learning disabilities.
  • Experience supervising junior staff and student nurses.
  • Ability to identify and positively influence social factors affecting mental distress.
  • Up‑to‑date clinical knowledge, including dual diagnosis and health and social care needs.
  • Ability to undertake all statutory and mandatory training, including PBM/Breakaway (subject to Occupational Health clearance).

  • Engage positively with service users and work effectively as a team member.
  • Assimilate new concepts and approaches to care.
Checks and Compliance
  • Disclosure and Barring Service check – subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exception Order) 1975.
