Opportunity
A rare and exciting opportunity for a Learning Disability Nurse. This role is for a Community Learning Disability Nurse within Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust. The position is Band 6, but experienced Band 5 nurses who want to develop skills are also welcome.
Key Responsibilities- Work independently to deliver a safe, effective service for people with learning disabilities and additional complex needs such as mental health, epilepsy and dementia.
- Manage a complex, high-risk caseload across a large geographical area.
- Link with other professionals and agencies to achieve positive outcomes for service users.
- Work flexibly, using reasonable adjustments to support clients, families and carers.
- Ensure all systems and processes are followed in accordance with Trust objectives.
- Provide assessment and implementation of evidence-based interventions for people with learning disabilities and associated needs.
- Supervise, mentor and teach qualified and unqualified staff, including students.
- Coordinate care for a specified group of service users.
- Support Clinical Governance initiatives at team and service level.
- Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities (RNLD).
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Formal teaching and assessing course (FLAP / FLIP) – essential.
- Registration as a non‑medical prescriber with the NMC, having undertaken the required Level 3 training.
- Formal post‑registration learning and post‑qualification experience in learning disabilities or a related area, some of which should have been in a community setting.
- Extensive experience of first-line assessments, including risk assessment.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience collaborating with other agencies, including the voluntary sector.
- Previous autonomous working experience.
- Demonstrable skills in risk assessment and management.
- Knowledge of evidence-based interventions for service users with learning disabilities.
- Experience supervising junior staff and student nurses.
- Ability to identify and positively influence social factors affecting mental distress.
- Up‑to‑date clinical knowledge, including dual diagnosis and health and social care needs.
- Ability to undertake all statutory and mandatory training, including PBM/Breakaway (subject to Occupational Health clearance).
- Approachable and flexible, able to work under pressure and problem solve in chaotic, complex situations.
- Engage positively with service users and work effectively as a team member.
- Assimilate new concepts and approaches to care.
- Disclosure and Barring Service check – subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exception Order) 1975.
