Job overview

A band 6 registered nurse is needed to join the surgical assessment team on ward 5b. The role involves caring for patients requiring surgical assessment, providing emergency surgical nursing, and driving improvement of service delivery. The role requires: lead and prioritise patient care, support and supervise junior staff, assist with teaching, communicate effectively, manage time, work independently and with the multidisciplinary team, and uphold professional standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner and be a role model.

  • Work in partnership with other health and social care professionals and agencies, service users, carers and families ensuring shared decision‑making.
  • Assess, plan, deliver and evaluate nursing care of patients in accordance with UK law, the NMC code of conduct and the Trust values.
  • Deliver high quality essential care and complex care to service users in the field of practice.
  • Act to protect the public, be responsible and accountable for safe, person‑centred, evidence‑based nursing practice.
  • Practice in a compassionate, respectful way, maintaining dignity and wellbeing and communicating effectively.
  • Act on understanding of how lifestyles, environments and care location influence health and wellbeing.
  • Seek opportunities to promote health and prevent illness.
  • Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Manage a patient caseload within defined clinical area.
  • Use leadership skills to supervise, manage others and contribute to planning and service improvement.
  • Organise own time and that of non‑registered staff, students and other learners.
  • Support senior staff in management and supervision of the defined clinical area.

Person specification Qualifications
  • Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Adult Nurse.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation and commitment to lifelong learning.
Experience
  • Experience in an acute clinical environment through placement or employment.
  • Previous experience in elective GI or emergency surgery.
  • Experience of leadership in the workplace.
  • Interest in teaching and imparting knowledge.
Knowledge / Skills
  • Self‑motivated, able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload with enthusiasm and genuine interest within the MDT.
  • Personally resilient, able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment; demonstrates ability to question and challenge practice constructively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, diagnose, plan and offer a range of treatment options.
  • Acts as a role model and leads by example to reinforce the Trust’s values and behaviours; supervises non‑registered and less experienced staff.
