Registered Nurse- Ophthalmology Outpatient Department, Band 5

Job Overview

The Band 5 Registered Nurse will work collaboratively across the Ophthalmology Outpatient Department, supporting the department manager, nursing team, consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver high‑quality patient care in line with the Trust’s vision of "delivering the best care every day for everyone." The role involves preparing patients for consultations and surgery, performing visual acuity assessments, intra‑ocular pressure measurement, eye drop instillation and, where required, leading the scrub nurse duties.

The candidate will also conduct pre‑operative assessments, support patients through the surgical pathway and undertake Nurse Injector training through a structured programme led by the Clinical Lead.

Deliver high‑quality, patient‑centred ophthalmic nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Provide safe and effective nursing care in a demanding ophthalmology environment, using specialist equipment and resources appropriately. Maintain accurate clinical documentation using Trust IT systems such as electronic patient records and Trak Care. Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, relatives and colleagues, including the delivery of sensitive information while maintaining dignity and confidentiality.

• Deliver high‑quality ophthalmic nursing care by undertaking comprehensive assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care in line with professional standards.
• Provide, demonstrate and supervise safe, effective nursing care within a demanding clinical environment, utilising specialist ophthalmic equipment.
• Administer medications safely and effectively in accordance with the Trust's policies.
• Prepare patients for consultations and procedures, including visual acuity assessment, intra‑ocular pressure measurement, eye drop instillation and scrub nurse duties.
• Conduct pre‑operative assessments face‑to‑face and via telephone to ensure patient safety and readiness for surgery.
• Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, relatives and colleagues, supporting assessment, care delivery, shared decision‑making and education.
• Facilitate timely referrals to internal and external services to meet holistic patient needs.
• Promote high standards of patient care, communication, professionalism, organisation and accountability.
• Utilise Trust IT systems, including intranet and electronic patient records, for accurate documentation.
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to deliver patient‑centred care.
• Implement clinical initiatives, service developments and introduction of new equipment within ophthalmology services.
• Support education, training and development of colleagues, students and new staff, contributing to a learning environment.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation within Ophthalmology services.
• Engage in a structured development programme, including Nurse Injector training under the Clinical Lead.

• Active registration with the Nursing Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, revalidation and commitment to lifelong learning.
• Recognised teaching and assessing qualification.
• Completion of Bronze Quality Improvement.

• Knowledge of basic ocular anatomy and physiology and management of ophthalmic conditions.
• Clinical reasoning skills to assess, diagnose, plan and offer treatment options.
• Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills.

• IT skills, including Electronic Patient Records, Trak Care, Microsoft Office.
• Experience building effective working relationships with multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to escalation appropriate concerns to promote patient safety.
• Experience in administering intravitreal injections.
• Experience in patient pre‑assessment.
