Overview

As part of the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust staff bank, this role offers flexible working patterns across Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General Hospital. The position focuses on enhanced care for patients with acute mental‑health disorders.

Main duties
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for a specific group of service users requiring enhanced care.
  • Work effectively as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Manage a patient/caseload within a defined clinical area.
  • Teach staff where appropriate.
Key responsibilities
  • Act as a registered mental‑health nurse and, where applicable, a Care Coordinator.
  • Work and liaise with other agencies and organisations.
  • Provide specialist care, education and advice following the Care Programme Approach, National Service Framework and NICE guidelines.
  • Support service users with medication management, including administration and monitoring of depot medication.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports in line with trust policy and NMC Code.
  • Offer de‑escalation support for aggressive behaviours using verbal and physical breakaway techniques.
  • Provide leadership support to junior nurses and other team members.
  • Implement daily risk assessments and management plans.
Working conditions
  • Work may be unpredictable with long periods of concentration.
  • Exposure to unpleasant working conditions, bodily fluids, infection control and COSHH regulations.
  • Potential for verbal and physical abuse by patients.
  • May require manipulation of patients/objects over 15 kg using manual handling techniques.
  • Requirement to maintain excellent standards of care under pressure.
Person specification – knowledge and experience
  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
  • Recent appropriate acute ward experience.
  • Willingness to develop knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to perform clinical skills with dexterity.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, policy and procedure.
  • Understanding of evidence‑based practice.
  • IT skills for hospital administration and training systems.
  • Organisational and time‑management skills.
