PASSION + TRUST + OUTWARD MINDSET + EVOLUTION + MASTERY + OWNERSHIP

At KL&A Engineers and Builders, we thrive where design and construction intersect. Our work on data center design/build projects embodies this collaboration—where fast, precise, and adaptive engineering keeps pace with rapidly evolving technology and construction needs.

We’re looking for a Project Engineer who’s energized by the challenge of working on complex, fast-moving builder-driven projects. If you’re the kind of engineer who enjoys problem solving on the fly, thrives on collaboration, and wants to see your designs come to life at scale, this role is for you.

The Opportunity

As a Project Engineer for Data Center Design, you’ll be part of a dedicated, full-time team supporting the design and construction of large-scale data centers and their supporting structures. You’ll work closely with builders, system designers, and other consultants to develop structural solutions that evolve alongside the needs of the project—often while construction is already underway.

You’ll help shape how structure supports process, balancing design precision with responsiveness. This work requires technical depth, flexibility, and strong teamwork across disciplines.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead day-to-day structural design and documentation for data center buildings and supporting systems.
  • Design both primary building structures and extensive secondary systems—such as cooling tower platforms, generator skids, interior mezzanines, and mechanical support framing.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to evolving design requirements, system updates, and builder‑driven changes.
  • Work closely with Project Managers and construction partners to ensure designs align with fast‑track construction schedules.
  • Collaborate daily with other engineers, designers, and BIM coordinators to resolve conflicts and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Provide timely, high‑quality responses during the construction phase, including RFIs, coordination requests, and real‑time design adjustments.
  • Maintain quality and constructability even under compressed timelines.
What Makes This Work Unique
  • Design that evolves: Unlike architecturally driven projects, data center design is fluid—plans change as systems develop. Flexibility and responsiveness are key.
  • Speed and precision: The builder’s needs drive design priorities, so accuracy and quick turnaround are both essential.
  • High collaboration: You’ll be part of a close‑knit design team in constant communication with construction partners and other disciplines.
  • Continuous engagement: Design and construction phases overlap, requiring active involvement all the way through project completion.
Qualifications
  • ABET‑accredited degree in Structural or Architectural Engineering.
  • EI/EIT or PE license (or ability to obtain).
  • 5–10 years of structural design experience.
  • Strong knowledge of steel design; experience with secondary or modular structures preferred.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing design information and priorities.
  • Authorization to work in the US without sponsorship, now and in the future.
Bonus Points For
  • Experience with data centers, industrial, or other highly coordinated design/build projects.
  • Revit, RAM, or RISA proficiency.
  • Familiarity with delegated design or fast‑track construction workflows.
What Success Looks Like
  • You communicate clearly and collaborate seamlessly with teammates and builders.
  • You stay calm and creative under pressure—balancing speed with quality.
  • You take ownership of your work and follow through to make sure designs perform in the field.
  • You embrace change as a chance to innovate.
