Registered Nurse I, RN I - Campus at Lookout Mountain, Youth Services Center - Golden

Join the Colorado Department of Revenue to deliver health care to detained and committed youth within the nurse’s scope of practice. Primary care is provided by independent practitioners with responsibility for a continuum of care from the initial assessment through development and maintenance of health care including physical, psychiatric and dental maintenance.

Specific

Job Duties
  • Initial nursing assessments and triage of requests for health/medical care submitted by youth; review admission medical information obtained at intake.
  • Administer nursing care and provide youth education for routine, urgent and emergent medical situations within scope of practice. Obtain laboratory and other diagnostic procedures, review results and notify provider as indicated.
  • Initiate nursing/medical treatment plans for youth with special health care needs; revise as needed.
  • Complete health appraisals, physical exams, vision/hearing screenings, in-house laboratory diagnostic testing (e.g., urine dipsticks, pregnancy tests, STI urine testing, PPD tests), and immunizations per Division of Youth Services (DYS) policy.
  • Document all encounters with youth in electronic medical records system and maintain confidentiality of patient information according to HIPAA regulations.
  • Initiate consultations/referrals to mid-level provider and/or appropriate physician; respond to emergent situations (Code Blue, Code Red) by administering CPR/First Aid and calling 911 if indicated.
  • Deliver medications, medical supplies and evaluate youth who may be confined to specific buildings or rooms throughout the campus setting; handle other nursing duties as delegated by DYS physicians or mid-level providers.
  • Responsible for ordering, preparation and administration of medications, maintaining Medication Administration Records, monitoring for errors, and educating youth and staff on medication safety.
  • Assess vaccine status and administer needed vaccines per CDC/ACIP and provider recommendation; follow Vaccine for Children’s Program protocols.
  • Conduct mental health assessments, provide basic mental health interventions, and refer to psychiatrists or mental health resources as required.
  • Assess and identify knowledge deficits related to general health and hygiene; provide individual and group education on health promotion, disease prevention, safety, and sexual health topics.
  • Assist in inventory management of medications, supplies and equipment; confirm drug and vaccine storage, handle inventory logs, and maintain First Aid Kits and AEDs.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors or medical staff.
Minimum Qualifications , Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
  • Current, valid licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Colorado Board of Nursing or any state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
  • No substitutions; all candidates must meet state licensure requirements.
  • Be a minimum of 21 years old, with no felony convictions or history of domestic violence.
  • Full background check requirement: CBI name check, fingerprint check, ICON Colorado court database, Medicare fraud database, reference checks, professional license verification, drug screen, PREA, Trails, CAPS.
  • Ability to work required shift schedules, essential services designation, and float to other DYS Youth Centers when needed.
  • Hold a current CPR Card; perform CPR as required.
  • Must complete the DYS Pre‑service Training Academy, Field Training Program (FTO), and mandatory annual training.
  • Diana Screen® must be administered to all applicants; results may be used in hiring decisions.
  • Former State employees terminated or resigned under disciplinary action must disclose and provide explanation; failure to do so may result in disqualification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with adolescent health care.
  • Experience with mental health nursing.
  • Experience with correctional nursing.
  • Relatable experience as a current or previous State of Colorado employee.
Highly Desirable Competencies
  • Knowledge of current medications and their administration.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other professionals to achieve interdisciplinary goals.
  • Ability to assess and coordinate community health care services.
  • Proficiency in collecting, recording, and interpreting data concisely and accurately.
  • Ability to self‑regulate emotions under stress.
