EC OCS Teacher role at Wayne County Public Schools

An Occupational Course of Study (OCS) teacher in North Carolina develops and implements individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, focusing on functional academics, hands-on community-based training, and vocational skills to prepare them for employment and independent living. They work with students in grades 9-12, collaborating with families, vocational rehabilitation staff, and other professionals to ensure students are equipped for post-school success.

Responsibilities
  • Curriculum and Instruction:
    Develops and implements a standards-based curriculum tailored to OCS students, incorporating functional academics, hands-on vocational training, and community-based experiences.
  • IEP Development and Implementation:
    Creates and manages Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students, ensuring they align with post-school goals for employment and independent living.
  • Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
    Utilizes diagnostic information and assessment tools to track student progress, update IEPs, and adjust instruction as needed.
  • Vocational Training and Work-Based Learning:
    Coordinates and supervises in-school and community-based vocational training, as well as paid work experiences, to prepare students for the workforce.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    Works closely with parents, families, vocational rehabilitation counselors, and other professionals to support student success.
  • Behavior Management:
    Implements positive and proactive strategies for managing student behavior, including de-escalation techniques.
  • Record Keeping and Documentation:
    Maintains accurate records of student progress, work hours, and required documentation for the OCS program.
Essential Skills And Qualifications
  • Special Education Expertise:
    Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices for students with disabilities.
  • Curriculum and Instruction:
    Ability to develop and deliver instruction that is aligned with the OCS curriculum and student IEPs.
  • Assessment and Data Analysis:
    Skills in using assessment tools to monitor student progress and inform instructional decisions.
  • Vocational Training and Work-Based Learning:
    Experience in coordinating and supervising vocational training experiences.
