Nurse Practitioner – WISH Program (School-Based Health Center)
Summary: Under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner provides primary health care services to students in a school-based health center through the WISH program (Wayne Initiative for School Health). The role focuses on assessment, planning, health education, counseling, and promoting healthy lifestyles to support student success.
Key Responsibilities- Provide quality patient care using nursing process and critical thinking.
- Obtain comprehensive health histories; screen for psychosocial, cultural, genetic, and lifestyle factors.
- Perform full and problem-focused physical examinations.
- Identify abnormal findings and order/interpret diagnostic tests.
- Develop differential diagnoses and create patient care plans.
- Provide health promotion, disease prevention education, and anticipatory guidance.
- Prescribe medications and initiate non-pharmacologic therapies.
- Document all patient interactions in the EHR accurately and promptly.
- Collaborate with school staff and healthcare providers to meet student needs.
- Participate in policy review, clinic operations, and performance improvement initiatives.
- Support clinic goals related to enrollments, physicals, and immunizations.
- Maintain communication with students, parents, staff, and physicians.
- Keep credentials and certifications current; stay updated on adolescent medicine trends.
- Ensure adequate supplies and proper equipment operation.
- Work a flexible schedule to meet clinic needs.
- Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
- Unrestricted RN license and NP approval in North Carolina (NC Medical Board & NC Board of Nursing).
- BLS certification required.
- 2–3 years of experience with adolescents in pediatrics or clinic settings preferred.
- Strong knowledge of adolescent development and common pediatric conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to connect with adolescents.
- Proficiency in MS Office and EHR systems.
- Valid NC driver's license not required unless driving a Wayne UNC vehicle.
