The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA) at UNC Health Wayne is a hospital employee that works in the Anesthesia Care Team model to provide anesthesia care in the Surgical services department and elsewhere within the hospital. We are a growing department that is patient focused, collaborative, and supportive, with access to state-of-the-art anesthesia and monitoring equipment. All aspects of anesthesia services are provided to include pre/post/perioperative care in the surgical services suites (14 operating rooms), endoscopy suite, and labor and delivery/c-section suite.

CRNA’s provide all types of anesthesia care to include placement of A-lines, SAB, epidurals, General and MAC anesthetics. Opportunities exist for the placement of regional anesthetics as well.

This is a Call Key position with rotating shifts, daily egress based on next day’s call status, 1/4 weekends (with a goal of moving to 1/5) on call currently, 1 day a week on call usually. Day off after call with pay, incentive bonus to work the day off after call if needed. Beeper/Call pay is $25/hr with call back paid at 1.5× hourly rate and 2‑hour minimum.

Cases include general, orthopedic, urology, some vascular (EVAAR, TAVR, CEA, grafts etc) peds and adult dental, gynecology, Neuro (very Rare crani), well peds ENT, adult ENT, Lithos, Ophthalmology, Endoscopy, 2 robots. No Hearts or major chest cases. Weekend cases are urgent to emergent only - not elective scheduled. Four anesthesia technicians are employed daily (except weekends) to assist you with your daily workflow and provide you with support services.

We utilize the 4:1 MDA to CRNA model with a very collegial group of MDAs here. Your knowledge, opinion, and desire to care for the patient is extremely valued. The potential for a yearly Organizational Goal related bonus exists as well as yearly evaluations that lead to yearly pay increases. Retirement vehicles include, 403B (employee and employer sponsored), 457, and HSA.

CRNA’s earn 10.46 hrs pp of PTO their first year and 12.92 hrs pp thereafter. Health insurance PPO vs HSA is available as well as Dental, Vision, and various indemnity insurances.

Summary

The Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) administers anesthesia under the supervision of the Attending Anesthesiologist, administers local, inhalation, intravenous and other anesthetics prescribed during surgery, deliveries or other medical procedures. Institutes resuscitative procedures throughout the hospital, including the recovery room, and is available at all times while on duty.

Responsibilities
  • Performs complete pre-anesthesia assessment including laboratory and diagnostic studies. Includes important aspects of patient history and physical. Aware of and fully comprehends history, physical, and laboratory data. Establishes good rapport with patients. Anticipates needs and possible problems. Consults with NP/MD as indicated.
  • Appropriately prepares for case management. Assembles all essential equipment in an orderly manner. Has equipment ready and in working condition to safely administer anesthesia. Demonstrates knowledge of anticipated needs. Prepares patients for anesthesia to include explaining procedures and positioning patient on the surgical table.
  • Develops plan of care for anesthetic management in a systematic manner based on assessment, interpretation and anticipated procedure. Recognizes patient difficulties.
