Job Description Summary

The Senior Systems Engineer ensures the stability, integrity, and efficient operation of the city’s IT systems. This position involves designing, implementing, and maintaining systems to support business objectives while ensuring optimal performance and security. The Senior Systems Engineer works collaboratively with IT teams and stakeholders to troubleshoot issues, support system enhancements, and implement new technologies to drive operational efficiency. Additionally, this role includes the design and management of the systems architecture, including the physical appliances that support the virtual environment.

The candidate will have proven experience managing and optimizing complex environments, focusing on performance, security, and scalability. Advanced experience with administration and support of critical systems, including the management of virtual infrastructure, Microsoft Entra, Office 365, endpoint management systems, DNS services, and backup solutions is required.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with network staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems.
  • Work with executive team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior team members.
  • Design and deploy new applications and enhancements to existing applications, software, and operating systems.
  • Perform cost-benefit and return on investment analyses for proposed systems.
  • Conduct research on software and systems products to justify recommendations and support purchasing efforts.
  • Interact and negotiate with vendors, outsource rs, and contractors to secure system-related products and services.
  • Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improvement.
  • Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts.
  • Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and recovery processes.
  • Integrate servers and ensure system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware, and applications.
  • Create and maintain documentation related to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
  • Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.
  • Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems.
  • Monitor and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports.
  • Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems.
Qualifications
  • Formal

    Education:

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Experience:

    Minimum of six years in a related field.
  • Certifications:

    Must possess two certifications from Microsoft, Cisco, VMware, CompTIA, Commvault, ISC2, GIAC, or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License and meet FBI CJIS background regulations.
  • Strong reading, writing, and communication skills.
  • Mathematical proficiency for general calculations.
  • Leadership skills:
    Ability to oversee work quality, train, and schedule staff.
  • Budget responsibility experience: moderate oversight of program budgeting.
  • Policy/Decision Making:
    Ability to support budget documents and research justification.

    Skills:

    Advanced knowledge in design and implementation of complex systems.
