City of Goodyear is currently recruiting for the position of Recruit Firefighter.
Job SummaryRecruit Firefighters will attend a regional fire academy where they will learn, practice, and be evaluated on the essential duties required of a Firefighter. This comprehensive training program prepares new recruits for the physical, technical, and interpersonal demands of the profession.
During the academy, Recruit Firefighters receive instruction and hands‑on experience in:
- Firefighting tactics and operational procedures
- Emergency medical services
- Fire code enforcement and fire prevention practices
- Rescue and salvage operations
- Public education and community engagement
- Physical fitness and wellness
- Additional specialized topics essential to fire service operations
Upon successful completion of the regional fire academy, recruits are promoted to the classification of Firefighter and assigned to operational shifts within the Goodyear Fire Department.
Compensation- Recruit Pay: $29.55 / hour (40‑hour week during the 14‑week academy)
- Post‑Academy Pay: $23.03 / hour (56‑hour week after promotion)
- Day‑Rate Calculation:
Day Rate = Staff Hourly Wage × (3,054 ÷ 2,080)
- 18 years of age
- Valid driver’s license
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current Arizona State Certified Emergency Medical Care Technician (EMCT) or Paramedic
- Current CPAT completed within the last year (January 12, 2025 – January 12, 2026)
- Public Safety Answers written test and virtual interview completed before the Final date to receive applications

- Proof of active NREMT certification (if applying from out of state)
- Copies of current EMT/Paramedic certification, CPAT, and valid driver’s license
- The Goodyear Fire Department uses Public Safety Answers for the written examination and virtual interview components.

- Successful candidates will be invited to the Recruit Firefighter Assessment.
- Mandatory Orientation – February 6, 2026 (17:00–21:00)
- Hands‑On Assessment Day – February 7 or 8, 2026 (full‑day session)
- Active participation in all assessment components is required.
- Candidates who advance will be scheduled for a final interview with the Fire Chief.
- Respond to emergency calls and perform emergency medical service.
- Respond to non‑emergency calls such as snake removal, smoke detector battery replacement, and hydrant checks.
- Educate the public, enforce fire code, conduct inspections, and participate in drills and presentations.
- Maintain station, vehicles, and equipment; complete administrative duties.
- Successfully complete firefighter recruit training at an accredited regional fire academy.
- Obtain Firefighter I & II certification through the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence.
- Obtain Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations certification.
- Successfully pass nine‑month evaluations.
- Successfully complete the Trial Period Firefighter Task Book.
- Attend Goodyear’s Employee Orientation.
- Vacation Leave: 56‑hour accrual rate 6.65 per pay period, front‑loaded in first year.
- Sick Leave: 56‑hour accrual rate 5.18 per pay period, front‑loaded in first year.
- 12 paid holidays per year plus one floating holiday.
- Local Days: 48 hours per fiscal year.
