Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Working student: Design & Proposal Ferries

We offer you an Ocean of Possibilities. Join our family.

About us

Within Damen Offshore and Specialized Vessels, we have a department dedicated to our Ferries. The Design & Proposal team for ferries is responsible for designing and preparing cost estimates, ensuring that the design meets the specified customer and classification requirements. Not only are we looking for the right solution in the form of a ferry proposal, but also the right vessel that is future‑proof!

The

role

To create an appropriate ferry design, it is essential to accurately map the vessel’s operational profile. Part of the operational profile is the ship’s speed, which depends on various (external) factors. One of these factors is the tidal current along the intended route.
To gain a proper understanding of the ship’s operational profile, the tidal current in the area must be analyzed in detail and linked to the ship’s operation. As an intern you will answer the main research question: “How does the ship’s operational profile depend on the tidal current in a specific area?”

By using available current data, a speed prediction tool, and statistical analysis, the speed profile of the vessel to be designed must be determined. At a later stage, the findings of your study will be used to design the ship’s propulsion system as sustainably as possible.

Key accountabilities
  • Develop a method to access relevant data and couple it to the existing speed prediction tool.
  • Apply general statistics to predict the impact of tidal currents on the vessels operational profile.
  • Analyze outcomes and present your findings.
  • Work closely with the Design & Proposal team.
Skills & Experience

We are looking for a student who:

  • Is currently pursuing a Bachelor or Master in a maritime related study.
  • Has experience with Microsoft Excel and preferably Python.
  • Communicates fluently in Dutch, as all existing data and documentation is in Dutch.
  • Is full‑time available for the summer period, specifically July 2026.
What we offer
  • Mentoring at academic level will be available throughout the internship.
  • Basic salary and travel allowance will be paid for the duration of the assignment.
  • A pleasant and dynamic, international work environment with informal atmosphere.
  • Insight into the vessel’s design process.

Due to housing issues, we cannot accept international students that do not have accommodation in the Netherlands yet. Be aware that this assignment is one month only!
