We are a leading shipbuilder offering an exciting internship in Acoustic Analysis.
About the RoleAs an intern in the Sound & Vibrations Research Team, you will develop a methodology to analyze time‑domain data from sea trials and build a prototype tool to identify and characterize acoustic sources.
Project ObjectiveDevelop a method and build a tool that processes audio recordings from sea trials to automatically:
- Identify acoustic sources (diesel engine, electric motor, propeller, cavitation, turbulence, pump/HVAC, etc.)
- Determine source characteristics (rotational speed/RPM, number of blades/cylinders, etc.)
- Quantify the acoustic contribution per source (level, spectrum, and derived metrics)
- Perform source separation to isolate each detected source’s contribution
The final result will be a prototype that supports acoustic experts in analysis, troubleshooting, and design validation.
Key Accountabilities- Create a model that classifies acoustic sources from time‑domain recordings of pressures, accelerations, etc.
- Define source‑specific outputs such as RPM, number of blades, and number of cylinders.
- Develop a prototype application in Python/MATLAB.
- Deliver documentation and evaluation based on real Damen sea‑trial data.
- University Master student in Naval Architecture, Maritime Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics or related field.
- Affinity with acoustics, spectrograms, and harmonic analysis.
- Familiarity with signal processing and machine‑learning frameworks.
- Analytical mindset.
- Strong programming skills in MATLAB or Python.
- Mastery of English (spoken and written).
- Academic level mentoring throughout the internship.
- Internship compensation and travel allowance in line with company policy.
- Project with direct relevance to multiple business functions and future digital products.
- Potential for internal rollout and possibly a publication or conference contribution.
