The Part-Time American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter plays a vital role in ensuring educational accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing students at Goshen College. This position provides professional interpretation services across academic settings, working collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to deliver consistent, high-quality interpretation that supports student success and maintains compliance with ADA requirements. The interpreter will foster an inclusive learning environment that reflects Goshen College’s commitment to diversity, equity and transformative community.
Essential Functions:Interpretation Services
- Provide real-time ASL interpretation for lectures, class discussions, presentations and classroom activities across various academic disciplines.
- Interpret accurately and professionally in diverse educational settings and subject areas.
- Support college events, meetings, and activities when scheduled hours permit.
Preparation and Collaboration
- Review course materials, syllabi, and specialized vocabulary in advance of interpretation assignments.
- Collaborate with faculty members to understand course content, teaching styles and subject-specific terminology to ensure accurate interpretation.
- Prepare for weekly interpretation assignments, including one hour of dedicated preparation time.
Professional Standards and Documentation
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional boundaries in accordance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff regarding interpretation needs and accommodations.
- Document services provided and maintain accurate records as required.
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain and enhance interpretation skills.
Education: Current Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) certification required, or actively working toward RID certification. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience: Educational interpreting experience preferred, particularly in higher education settings.

- Ability to interpret accurately across various academic subjects and settings required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment required.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality required.
- Familiarity with specialized academic vocabulary across multiple disciplines preferred.
- Experience interpreting technical or scientific content preferred.

Schedule and Wage:This position pays $50 per hour, is part-time, 13 hours per week, aligned with student course schedules during the academic year (30-week calendar). This includes one hour of preparation time. The schedule will vary based on student course enrollment each semester. Compensatory time may be earned for any hours worked beyond the allotted 13 hours weekly.
Physical Requirements:- Position requires standing or sitting for extended periods during interpretation assignments.
- Ability to use hands and arms repetitively for interpretation.
- Ability to move between campus locations for class coverage.
- Prolonged periods in classroom environments.
Environmental Conditions:
Work will primarily take place in classroom settings and other academic spaces across campus.
