Summary

In this specialty care role, the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will primarily be assigned to medical oncology. Oncology APPs work interdependently with a medical oncologist in managing oncology patients. The care provided by APPs may include:

  • Communicating with referring and primary health care providers
  • Conducting comprehensive or episodic health history and physical assessments
  • Developing pain management regimens
  • Educating patients and families on treatment plans and prevention strategies
  • Maintaining clinical documentation
  • Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests such as lab work and x-rays
  • Providing referrals to other specialty providers
  • Overseeing treatment infusions
  • Participating in medical oncology-specific clinical quality and research projects
  • Prescribing medications and other treatments
  • Managing acute illnesses associated with cancer treatment
  • Providing palliative care services
