Reports to the Practice Manager. Provides professional nursing care in support of medical care as directed by the physician. Prepares patients for examinations, administers medications, assists physician in all aspects of care and completes laboratory duties as necessary. Communicates with patients and physicians routinely in a courteous manner. Performs other activities necessary to the operation of the clinic.

Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care for patients and assist the physician in all aspects of care according to established standards and practices.
  • Perform general nursing care, administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and assist during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Maintain orderly and timely patient flow, prioritizing emergency needs.
  • Greet patients, obtain basic history, take vital signs, and collect specimens as indicated.
  • Schedule tests, admissions, referrals, and provide pretesting instructions.
  • Maintain and review patient records and charts; post test results after physician review; inform patients of results and recommendations; document communications with patients.
  • Handle incoming calls, call in prescriptions or orders as directed by the physician; provide patient education on medications and treatment instructions.
  • Complete HMO referral forms and transmit information to insurance companies for preadmission screening or utilization review.
  • Assist in patient education as needed (e.g., insulin teaching, breast self-exam, home blood pressure monitoring).
  • Assist doctors with hospital or nursing home activities, rounds, procedures, surgery as mutually agreed.
  • Assist with billing for hospital services as applicable.
Additional Functions and Competence
  • Screen and refer pharmaceutical representatives; maintain follow-up systems for critical situations.
  • Prepare and maintain trays or carts for procedures; ensure proper consent forms are completed prior to procedures or surgeries.
  • Check emergency cart monthly for expired medications and sufficient medication supply; audit narcotics and report discrepancies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of exam rooms; follow universal precautions and OSHA guidelines.
  • Inform personnel when medications and supplies need to be ordered; complete other job-related duties as assigned.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and stay accountable for information shared.
  • Complete mandatory education, annual competencies, and department-specific education within established time frames.
  • Maintain license/certification and registrations in good standing; maintain BCLS (CPR) and other required certifications.
  • Adhere to universal precautions and regulatory requirements; comply with organizational policies.
  • Available to work overtime or additional shifts when required.

Education And Experience
  • Successful completion of a nursing program from an accredited school of nursing. A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Indiana and one year of related nursing experience is required. One year of medical office nursing experience is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Comprehensive knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice; ability to provide and evaluate patient care and perform nursing procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment, safety hazards, and universal precautions to maintain a safe environment.
  • Analytical ability to identify patient problems, interpret data, and assess patient conditions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; high-level interpersonal skills for working with team members, patients, families, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and be self-motivated.
Working Conditions
  • Clinic environment with exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous substances, bodily fluids, and blood borne pathogens.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to walk/stand for prolonged periods; push carts and wheelchairs; lift up to 50 pounds; assist to reposition patients up to 35 pounds without assistance; perform CPR as needed.
