About

The Role

The Veteran Services Director provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for Alamance County’s Veterans Services Department, which is part of the consolidated human services agency. This position oversees veteran service officers and support staff and ensures the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and compassionate services to veterans, surviving spouses, and dependents.

The Director works with a high degree of independence while receiving general guidance from the human services director through periodic meetings and review of program performance. This role blends administration, strategic planning, direct service, and community partnership building, all with one goal in mind: improving outcomes for veterans and their families.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, plan, supervise, and coordinate veteran services programs and staff.
  • Hire, train, mentor, and evaluate a dedicated team of professionals.
  • Assist veterans and their dependents with benefits, eligibility, claims, and appeals.
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of benefit applications and supporting documentation.
  • Provide support to pensioned veterans and surviving spouses with annual eligibility requirements.
  • Offer homebound services to veterans and families when possible.
  • Manage the department’s operating budget, strategic plan execution, and performance measures.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and required data.
  • Represent the department at outreach events, meetings, and community education activities.
  • Collaborate with county teams and community partners to connect veterans to employment, housing, health, education, and behavioral health resources.
Qualifications

Successful candidates will have strong knowledge of veterans’ programs and benefits, applicable laws and regulations, and community resources. You should be comfortable interpreting technical rules, building partnerships, and leading a team with fairness, positivity, and purpose. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with basic knowledge of state and federal grant administration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, human services, social work, business administration, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in veteran services, human services, public administration, or a related field.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior military service.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Current certification as a veteran service officer through the state veteran affairs division and the national association of county veteran service officers.
  • Three to five years of leadership experience.
Certification Requirements

The selected candidate must obtain and maintain certification through the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers, complete required continuing education, and stay current on laws, regulations, and best practices.
