EKG / Stress Technician - Diagnostic Cardiology

General Summary

Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, the EKG / Stress Technician is responsible for supervising cardiovascular stress tests, summarizing and reporting data, performing electrocardiograms (EKGs), Holter and event monitoring, and other duties as requested by authorized personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Confer with patients and/or family members to gather pertinent patient information and document it in the patient’s chart.
  • Explain diagnostic procedures and answer questions to allay fears and encourage cooperation.
  • Instruct and assist patients in preparation for EKG stress tests, including applying heart monitor devices or electrodes.
  • Perform and edit EKGs, supervise exercise stress tests, and assist in pharmacologic stress test supervision per policy.
  • Apply heart monitors, ensuring devices are secured and functioning to record heart activity over an extended period.
  • Record appropriate data during treadmill stress tests—including electrocardiographic changes, blood pressure, and patient condition.
  • Remove heart monitor devices, analyze recordings to identify heart patterns and potential cardiac pathology, and route results to physicians.
  • Route stress test data to physicians for interpretation.
  • Maintain equipment in clean, proper working order; replenish supplies; perform minor repairs; notify supervisor of serious malfunctions.
  • Perform miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering telephones, filing records, and preparing patient charges.
  • Stay current on field trends and techniques by reading journals, books, and literature; attend seminars and conferences when available.
  • Perform other related duties as authorized personnel request.
Essential Functions
  • Read and write to obtain and record patient information and understand technical manuals.
  • Perform non‑complex arithmetic calculations for test results.
  • Use interpersonal skills to communicate with patients, family, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Apply analytical skills to review EKG data, identify cardiac pathology, and irregular heart patterns.
  • Concentrate and pay close attention to detail.
  • Walk and stand for approximately 30% of the work day.
  • Carry weights of under ten (10) pounds for about 20% of work time during equipment calibration and repair.
  • Push EKG machines to patient rooms to obtain EKGs.
Working Conditions

Normal EKG laboratory and patient care environment with minimal noise, dust, and temperature exposure. Infrequent exposure (less than 10% of work time) to infection and/or contagious disease when administering tests.

Orientation Requirements

Must attend medical center new‑hire orientation and department orientation. The following is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed and is not an exhaustive statement of duties, responsibilities, or qualifications.

Requirements
  • Certified BLS Provider specializing in Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association (AHA) obtained within 90 days of hire or job transfer.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Exercise Science, Physiology, or a related health science.
Preferred Credentials
  • Certified Advanced Life Support specializing in Advanced Cardio Life Support from the AHA.
  • Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist specializing in Rehabilitation from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
Work Experience
  • Completion of an internship (1 semester) in exercise physiology/science required.
  • 1–2 years of experience in cardiac stress testing preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a rhythm strip test during interview.
