General Summary

Assist registered nurses and licensed practical nurses with basic, age‑appropriate nursing care under direct supervision, ensuring optimal patient comfort and safety.

  • Patient Care Skills
    • Assist RN/LPN with patient hygiene (bathing, foot care, shaving, hair care).
    • Support mobility activities, transfers, and repositioning to prevent skin breakdown.
    • Perform non‑sterile treatments and assist with monitoring and reporting patient pain levels.
    • Document vital signs, basic patient care, and I/O records.
    • Assist with pre‑surgical preparation and collection of non‑sterile specimens.
    • Utilize computer entry as directed and observe patients in restraints according to policy.
  • Dietary Assistance
    • Prepare patients for meals, assist with menu selection and service.
    • Collect soiled trays and deliver snacks.
    • Record patient food intake and communicate any eating problems.
  • Transportation
    • Transport patients safely and efficiently, using proper transfer techniques.
    • Notify appropriate personnel of any changes in patient condition.
  • Safety
    • Maintain a safe environment, recognize unsafe conditions, and report immediately.
    • Apply universal precautions and protect against infection.
    • Observe patients at risk for falls or injury and follow practice guidelines.
    • Properly dispose of biomedical waste and use safe body mechanics.
  • Quality Improvement
    • Participate in QI activities, including data collection and corrective action plans.
    • Use cost‑containment measures in daily practice.
  • Environmental Services
    • Perform limited housekeeping activities in select areas as needed.
  • Compliance
    • Adhere to department, Medical Center policies, and absenteeism & tardiness policies.
  • Essential Functions
    • Mobility and transfer of patients and equipment.
    • Manual dexterity for patient treatments.
    • Organizational skills for data collection and response to abnormal situations.
    • Interpersonal and written communication with patients, families, staff, and physicians.
    • Physical ability for standing, stooping, carrying, pushing, and climbing ladders.
  • Working Conditions
    • Clinical unit setting; prolonged standing, lifting, and exposure to communicable diseases.
    • Frequent interruptions required to complete duties.
  • Orientation Requirements
    • New employee and department orientation attendance.

Education, Licensure & Certification Required
  • Certified BLS Provider (American Heart Association) obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Current Michigan Nurse Aide certification required at hire, or at least 6 months of acute‑care experience, or completion of the first year of a nursing school clinical rotation.
  • High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited program required.
