Overview

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of North Dakota is seeking an Assistant Professor of Mathematics with a doctoral degree in topology or a closely related area to begin August 16, 2026.

In addition to the description below, the appointment will begin as a 9-month or comparable contract with a distribution of duties that typically includes teaching, research, and service. The University of North Dakota is located in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Duties & Responsibilities

The successful applicant will receive a contract with an approximate distribution of 50% teaching; 40% research; and 10% service effort.   • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate students
  • Advise and mentor graduate students; direct graduate theses and independent study projects
  • Establish a solid and productive research program, such as through publication in peer-reviewed outlets and/or seeking extramural funding to support individual and collaborative projects. Serve as a catalyst for attracting and supporting graduate students in the MS in Mathematics Program.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Department of Mathematics & Statistics
  • Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery
  • Earned PhD in Mathematics (with an emphasis in topology or a closely related area) by August 15, 2026.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Evidence of research potential, such as a record of peer-reviewed publications in quality journals
  • Record of involvement in seeking extramural funding
  • Experience working on multi-disciplinary research teams
  • Experience mentoring students and supervising student research projects/independent studies
