GENERAL

SUMMARY:

Performs high complexity medical laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

PRINCIPAL

JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.
  • Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA)-designated Clinical Laboratory Manager, performs laboratory testing according to laboratory standards, policies and procedures in a timely thorough manner.
  • Analyzes test results and enters data into the computer using laboratory standards, policies and procedures.
  • Performs and analyzes quality control measures to ensure accurate clinical data. Analyzes unacceptable quality control results and troubleshoots shifts or trends as necessary.
  • Maintains competency and proficiency on all laboratory instrumentation and procedures; performs and documents preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment, troubleshooting problems as necessary. Notifies immediate supervisory personnel of equipment/instrument issues and calls Service regarding issues.
  • Communicates with coworkers, clients and leadership by transmitting patient cart testing and results, appropriate ideas, information and opinions clearly, concisely and courteously; maintains employee, patient, client and corporate confidentiality.
  • Performs general housekeeping tasks to maintain safe work environment; maintains adequate supplies in the work area.
  • Assists in training new employees, students, other technical staff and support staff.
  • Works collaboratively with all laboratory staff to ensure completion of testing and communication of necessary information to assist testing completion.
  • Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcomes to help improve department operations; assists with LEAN projects.
  • Performs service excellence must-haves to achieve an excellent patient/customer experience.
  • Basic knowledge in phlebotomy and phlebotomy procedures and ability to perform phlebotomy if required by laboratory facility.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  • Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.
  • Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.
  • REQUIRED

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory equipment/instrumentation, test procedures, and standards.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
  • Skill in the use and preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply such concepts to practical situations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and engage critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
  • Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related laboratory science from a two-year accredited college or CLIA- approved Military MLT program required or has earned a bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science meeting American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) criteria for MLT certification.

    OTHER CREDENTIALS /

    CERTIFICATIONS:

    ASCP certification as an MLT (ASCP) or equivalency preferred.
