We are looking for a field‑based technical sales professional who is comfortable traveling throughout the southwestern quadrant of Michigan, primarily around Grand Rapids. This role is with Detroit Pump, a division of Tencarva Machinery Company.
About the RoleAs a sales representative, you will partner closely with our Application Engineer and Customer Service teams to recommend equipment solutions based on flow rate, viscosity, temperature, pressure, pH, budget, and other variables. Success is measured by sales growth, margins, and profitability, but we prioritize trusted advisor relationships and problem‑solving over high‑pressure sales tactics.
Responsibilities- Call on personnel at all company levels, including technicians, operators, engineers, architects, managers, and GMs, providing process solutions and application advice.
- Engage with engineering firms servicing end‑users, delivering training sessions on product applications.
- Review blueprints, plans, and other documentation to develop cost estimates or projected production improvements.
- Propose changes to equipment, processes, or materials that reduce costs or improve performance.
- Create sales or service contracts for products or services.
- Develop long‑term customer relationships, building trust through proper application of our products.
- Provide technical services related to operation and maintenance of equipment.
- Deliver technical training to customer employees.
- Attend manufacturer training sessions.
- Plan and execute sales calls and customer visits proactively.
- Maintain accurate forecasts of business potential with customers and manufacturers.
- Plan territories and overall business strategy.
- Grow territory by increasing penetration of existing accounts and developing new accounts.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree from a 4‑year college or university is ideal but not required; strong preference for Engineering degrees (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Chemical, Electrical, etc.). An Associate’s Degree or trade certification in an engineering or technical field is acceptable with at least 2 years of technical sales experience.
Qualifications- 3+ years of B2B relationship management experience with industrial and/or municipal distributors, supply houses, manufacturers, end‑users, engineering firms, or subcontractors.
- 3+ years of technical outside sales experience, ideally in public water/wastewater sector or industrial markets.
- Strong hunter mentality and proven track record of driving new business.
- Hands‑on mechanical experience or related hobbies is a plus.
- Excellent communication and networking skills, with the ability to build trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Customer‑driven, positive, professional, customer‑first attitude.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multi‑task with attention to detail.
- Rapid learning of technical products and ability to provide technical support.
