The Senior Tax Manager is responsible for providing tax and consulting services to business clients with pass-through entities and to their business owners.
Responsibilities- Perform tax planning, preparation and research for pass-through entities (S-corps, LLCs, Partnerships) and the business owners’ individual returns, which may include estates, trusts and charitable entities.
- Manage client engagements, supervise and review the work of team staff members, and work closely with clients as well as internal managers and partners.
- Contribute to client satisfaction by providing timely services and work product.
- Demonstrate an understanding of tax concepts and actively pursue increased tax knowledge through client assignments and current tax developments.
- Ensure clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing their tax and reporting burdens; ensure compliance with all Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
- Possess significant knowledge of taxation related to personal income, estate and gift tax and wealth retention strategies, as well as taxation of entities owned by business owners (partnership and corporate taxation).
- Conduct top-level review of T/R, resolve all tax issues with clients, and involve specialists where appropriate.
- Plan and review the tax process and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget, timely billing and collection of A/R, manage client relationships/expectations, and provide advice to clients in a timely manner.
- Identify when research is needed and perform such research; clearly and concisely frame issues and report the analysis.
- Apply firm and professional standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns.
- Introduce and develop new or improved ideas to improve client positions, the firm, or personnel; review studies of tax implications and offer alternative courses of action; identify and leverage lessons learned to improve processes.
- Other duties as required.
- Build a team of professionals by training and working with them to serve high net worth clients.
- Supervise associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Review work prepared by associates and senior associates and provide review comments.
- Train associates and seniors on software tools.
- Act as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Schedule and manage workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provide verbal and written performance feedback.
- Bachelor’s degree required (major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred).
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Eight (8) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience.
- Prior supervisory experience required.
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (“EA”) required.
- Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
- Detail-oriented.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to effectively delegate work.
- Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills.
- Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals.
- Capable of effectively developing and maintaining client relationships.
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact.
