Responsibilities and Qualifications

Age Specific Responsibility

Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of growth and development across the life span and the ability to assess data reflective of the patient status and interpret information needed to identify each patient’s age-specific requirements, providing care as described in department policies and procedures.

Summary

Assumes full responsibility for evaluating patients’ need for occupational therapy. Plans and executes individual treatment programs in accordance with the state of Michigan licensure and OT scope of practice. Keeps treatment skills updated through continuing education, evidence-based research, and program development. Performs job responsibilities in alignment with the program’s strategic objectives and goals.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Responsibilities relate to the MFB Pillars of Excellence (Q=Quality, S=Service, P=People, G=Growth, F=Financial).

  • Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of license, certification or registration as required by law.
  • Provide patient care.
  • Evaluate patient condition.
  • Establish treatment goals in collaboration with patient and family and the treatment team; goals should be interdisciplinary and patient-centered. Establish written treatment plans and administer treatment; delegate responsibilities to occupational therapy assistants as appropriate.
  • Re-evaluate patient status and effects of treatment; revise treatment plan as necessary. Review revised goals with patient and family as appropriate.
  • Evaluate need for medical equipment and order equipment as necessary; instruct patient, family, and health care workers on use of equipment.
  • Participate in discharge planning by considering and communicating with patient, family, community support/services, and environmental limitations.
  • Demonstrate competence in relevant software and hardware; (Q).
  • Document patient status and progress through evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries per internal/external standards and reimbursement guidelines (Q).
  • Communicate with others to integrate occupational therapy treatment with all aspects of patient care (Q,S).
  • Participate in conferences/discussions as needed and exchange of records with other team members to integrate occupational therapy treatment plan.
