Description

Provides for the care, diagnosis and safety of patients. Collects, processes and analyzes blood, body fluids, tissues and excrements. Analyzes, validates and reports laboratory results in compliance with hospital, state, and federal regulations and standards.

QUALIFICATIONS Education

Minimum:
Bachelor’s Degree plus clinical internship in Medical Technology (Clinical Laboratory Science).

Credentials/Licensure

Minimum:
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or NCA certification - or – board eligible and must become certified within one year.

Related Experience

Minimum: N/A

Preferred:
One year hospital lab experience.

Minimum: N/A

Preferred:
Computer skills, customer service skills, troubleshooting skills.

Computer Competency

Familiarity with standard desktop and windows based computer system, including email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.

Physical/Mental

Minimum:
Requires considerable walking, standing, bending and ability to lift boxes and containers of fluid that weigh 40 lbs or more. Percent of time spent standing is 80% of the workday. All clinical laboratory testing requires concentration and attention to detail. Subject to frequent interruptions and changing of work priorities. Position requires 20 – 50% of the day spent on computer data entry.

Must be able to pass a color blindness test.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequently exposed to blood and body fluids, low levels of radiation, infectious diseases, potentially hazardous chemicals, sharps, fumes, and gases. Fast paced, potentially stressful environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of laboratory procedures and processes.
  • Reports accurate patient laboratory results with minimum errors.
  • Reviews results based on knowledge of age-related normals.
  • Works within all safety guidelines.
  • Uses quality control results in determining validity of patient results.
  • Is aware of Lab QA issues and works to improve them.
  • In lower workload time, performs order audits or other functions to improve quality.
  • Meets laboratory service goal with regard to stats.
  • Maintains at least average workload output on each bench worked.
  • Uses professional judgment to set workload priorities.
  • Assists coworkers when work is complete.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward change.
  • Promotes new ideas based on the needs of the customers.
  • Supports coworkers in improving productivity and meeting service goals.
  • Provides leadership support to MLT and non-technical staff.
  • Actively seeks out additional tasks to improve service.
  • Initiates positive work environment.
  • Performs instrument troubleshooting procedures.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of laboratory procedures and assists students and Medical Laboratory Technicians.
  • Responds to workload needs by flexing between laboratory benches.
  • Trains students and new staff.
