The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an influential leader for a program or area of nursing practice. The advanced knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in a focus area, evidence-based practice, collaboration, consultation, education, mentoring and change leadership. The specialized knowledge and advanced practice nursing skills are used within three major areas of impact: patient/family, nurses and nursing practice and the organization/system.
In collaboration with other members of the health care team, the CNS leads, provides, enhances and improves health care delivery by evaluating nursing practices, developing methodologies, establishing standards of care and providing consultative services. The CNS is a clinical expert in the theory-based and/or research-based nursing practice within a specialty area.
- Conducts comprehensive and holistic patient assessment using advanced practice nursing skills.
- Advises on pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for individuals or populations.
- Identifies problem situations or issues in patient care.
- Rounds in clinical area(s) and identifies high risk and problem prone cases for consultation and intervention.
- Synthesizes, interprets, makes decisions and recommendations, and evaluates responses on the basis of complex sources of data.
- Decisions made are based on ethical principles that support the patient and family/significant others and the health care team.
