Job Description

An EMT-P/CP (Community Paramedic) is a person certified by the State of Missouri to perform advanced life support and medical care. They will be responsible for ensuring that all equipment is present and in operating order, completing Emergency Medical Service reports for incidents where they are the lead EMT-P, administering the Mobile Integrated Health Care program as outlined by the Grandview Fire Department, and providing additional patient reporting for those they evaluate, assess, treat, or follow‑up.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed with the latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and action under the general supervision of the EMS Chief.

The Community Paramedic is responsible for medical control for all patient care that may be given, or any non‑emergent resources set up for the patient.

Responsibilities
  • Although the Community Paramedic is generally not assigned to these duties, they may be required to direct or participate in the rescue of persons from physically threatening situations.
  • Provides both basic and advanced life support care including, not limited to:
    • Comprehensive patient assessment
    • Differential diagnosis
    • Invasive airway management
    • Cardiac monitoring and interpretation
    • Administration of medications
    • Community Paramedic Program evaluations and resource management, including clinical follow‑ups of at‑risk or referred patients
  • Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation, utilizing the standards set under the American Heart Association’s Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Participates in infection control and directs all fire service personnel to protect themselves while on the emergency or non‑emergency scene.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relations with associates, other public safety agencies, civic and other official groups, and the public.
  • Expresses ideas clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Handles verbal and written communication with the patient, other pre‑hospital providers, and hospital personnel, including physician medical directors, home health agencies, and other partners established by the Community Paramedic Program.
  • Responds appropriately to public concerns and complaints.
  • Responds appropriately to patients as outlined in the Community Paramedic Program Plan.
  • Operates the computer and learns how to use general and job‑specific computer applications, such as electronic patient care reporting software.
  • Performs general office and clerical duties in support of the Community Paramedic Program and all other Department activities.
Qualifications
  • Valid Missouri EMT-P/Community Paramedic License as specified by Missouri Bureau of EMS regulation (19 CSR 30‑40.800).
  • No less than six years of clinical experience acting primarily in a lead Advanced Life Support (ALS) transporting provider role.
  • Shall hold current certifications in the following:
    • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support
    • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support
    • American Heart Association Pediatric Life Support or Fire Department approved alternative
    • Prehospital Trauma Life Support or Fire Department approved alternative
  • Proficiency in college‑level Math, Science, and English.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree is not required but desirable.
  • American Heart Association instructor certification in Heartsaver, Healthcare Provider, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Advanced Medical Life Support.
  • National Registry certification unless otherwise grandfathered by the Missouri Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.
  • Instructor certifications in Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS), Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEMS) and Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS).
  • Experience in an existing Community Paramedic program.
  • Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Ability to understand and act in accordance with Department policies, rules, and instructions.
  • Demonstrates mechanical aptitude as required in operation of firefighting equipment.
  • Performs emergency medical practices and procedures at the level of license held.
  • Performs general medical procedures outlined in the Community Paramedic Scope of Practice or as outlined in Department protocols.
