Position

Controls Engineer

Location / Travel

The ideal candidate will live in or near one of the following cities:
Greer, SC | Anderson, SC | Greenville, MI | Grandville, MI | Mishawaka, IN | Radford, VA. The candidate must be able to travel when needed. Required travel is more than 50%. Most travel would be in the US.

Overview

Designs, develops, tests, and maintains automated control systems for machinery and processes using hardware like Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and software like Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs). Key responsibilities include programming, system troubleshooting, collaborating with cross-functional teams, ensuring safety compliance, creating technical documentation, and performing system analysis and optimization. This role requires a strong foundation in electrical or a related engineering field, proficiency in CAD software, and excellent analytical and communication skills to manage complex automated systems effectively.

Responsibilities
  • Examine plant processes and design and implement changes that improve processes to increase efficiency and productivity.
  • Provide technical support of Programmable Logical Controller based hardware and software, and utilize electronic and mechanical theories and principles to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Create new control systems and integrate automated components, such as PLCs, motors, and other hardware, into existing infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement software for control systems, including programming PLCs and designing HMI interfaces for user interaction.
  • Conduct system testing and validation procedures to ensure systems perform according to specifications.
  • Analyze system performance data, troubleshoot existing systems, and implement solutions to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including system designs, installation drawings, and operation manuals.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, vendors, and suppliers to define requirements and implement solutions.
  • Ensure all designed control systems comply with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Perform regular system maintenance, updates, and preventative maintenance to keep systems running smoothly.
  • Update obsolete or outdated control systems to modern controls.
Required

Skills and Qualifications
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field. Minimum of 5 years hands‑on experience as a controls engineer in a manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    Expertise in designing and programming PLCs, such as Siemens and Allen Bradley products, and knowledge of CAD software like AutoCAD.
  • Analytical

    Skills:

    Strong cause‑effect analysis and problem‑solving abilities to identify and resolve issues within complex systems.
  • Communication:
    Excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with various departments and external stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail:
    Meticulous attention to detail to ensure the accuracy and safety of control systems.
