Maintenance / Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician

Location:

Elkhart County, IN

This position reports to the Manager, Facilities Services. The role encompasses a variety of duties including preventive maintenance, repair, alteration, and modification of building systems and equipment. Secondary responsibilities include work as a Refrigeration Technician, Pump/Motors/Compressors Technician, among others. The incumbent responds to and follows through on corrective maintenance of serious problems or conditions as reported by other facility staff or as instructed by supervisory personnel.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to calls from Beacon‑owned/leased properties, tenants, Facility Engineering staff, and management related to HVAC systems.
  • Collaborate with electrical/mechanical engineers and management staff on the review and submittal of recommendations for the expansion, compatibility, and installation of systems and equipment involved in new structures and upgrade projects.
  • Operate and monitor systems and equipment such as Building Energy Management Systems, high‑pressure boilers, small commercial/residential units, large commercial air‑conditioning systems including centrifugal chillers, refrigeration, pneumatics, etc.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, tests, and inspections of systems and equipment using applicable measurement devices.
  • Provide training to Facility Engineering staff and other hospital team members on the proper safety and use of equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, determine type and extent of malfunction of parts or components, obtain materials and tools, make required repairs, and test for proper operation.
  • Maintain routine records of equipment inspections, repairs performed, requests for service, time and material expended.
  • Perform job functions according to departmental safety and operational procedures.
Compliance and Oversight
  • Ensure contractors completing work with CFCs are certified.
  • Verify that operational manuals and procedures are current and comply with governing agencies in assigned areas.
  • Conduct tours of areas under construction by others, reporting any discrepancies to management.
  • Ensure that any sub‑contractors (excluding major construction handled by the Director of Construction Project Management) possess the proper license, bonding, etc.
Supporting Functions
  • Troubleshoot equipment/systems, determine type and extent of malfunction, obtain materials and tools, make required repairs, and test for proper operation.
  • Participate in the training and orientation of all new team members in the field of expertise.
  • Maintain current and inclusive information in training manuals.
  • Serve as an instructor for departmental in‑services.
  • Provide guidance and support to other Facility Engineering staff as needed.
  • Maintain routine records of equipment inspections, repairs performed, requests for service, time and material expended.
  • Perform job functions according to established departmental safety and operational procedures.
Professional Development
  • Read current literature that pertains to the position.
  • Make site visit tours (as approved) to observe new or different technologies.
  • Keep work areas orderly, clean and safe and properly caring for tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Complete other job‑related duties and projects as assigned.
Organizational Responsibilities
  • Attend and participate in department meetings and be accountable for all information shared.
  • Complete mandatory education, annual competencies, and department‑specific education within established time frames.
  • Complete annual employee health requirements within established time frames.
  • Maintain license/certification, registration in good standing throughout the fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by the position/department.
  • Consistently utilize appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adhere to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Comply with established organization and department policies.
  • Be available to work overtime or additional shifts when required.
