Position OverviewIn the Emergency Room (ER) setting, Patient Safety Observers play a vital role in maintaining the safety of behavioral health patients. These patients may be experiencing psychiatric crises, suicidal ideation, aggression, or confusion due to mental illness or substance use, and require close monitoring.
Position Responsibilities- Continuous Observation
- Ensure the patient does not harm themselves or others.
- Remain alert and within sight of the patient at all times.
- De‑escalation and Support
- Use calm, non‑threatening communication.
- Employ de‑escalation techniques when patients are agitated or anxious.
- Promote a therapeutic environment.
- Safety Maintenance
- Monitor for access to harmful objects.
- Ensure the environment is free of ligature risks and other hazards.
- Support staff during procedures or transitions (e.g., when restraining is necessary).
- Communication and Documentation
- Report changes in behavior promptly to nursing staff.
- Document patient behavior and activity as per hospital protocols.
- Assist with patient rounding and updates.
- Non‑Clinical Support
- Offer comfort measures: hydration, repositioning, or calming conversation.

Full‑time - Work Schedule:
Days, 7 am–7 pm
- High School diploma or equivalent (required)
- Completion of an approved nursing assistant course (required)
- Current Basic Life Support (AHA or American Red Cross BLS) certification (required)
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training course (CPI) required within 1 month of hire date (required)
- Training in non‑violent crisis intervention (e.g., CPI).
- Familiarity with HIPAA and patient rights.

Pay is determined based on various factors, including education level, years of experience, relevant certifications, and specific skills related to the position.
