Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of an AVID Tutor is to guide students toward academic and personal excellence that will reach beyond their secondary school years. They are active participants in the learning, growth, and personal development of students to prepare them for success in college and future careers. AVID tutors support middle and high school students enrolled in the AVID elective course by facilitating AVID tutorial/study groups under the guidance of an AVID elective teacher.

In addition, they serve as role models to students.

Qualifications
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • College student or graduate with a minimum 3.0 G.P.A. preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties
  • Facilitate tutorial sessions that underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes.
  • Assist students in any subject area by being familiar with students' textbooks, materials and AVID classroom resources.
  • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with students for the purpose of serving as a role model to students.
  • Communicate regularly with the AVID coordinator/teaching regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Participate in all required training, professional development sessions and meetings for the purpose of collaborating with other teachers and administrators in the development, evaluation and revision of the AVID College & Career Readiness System.
  • Partner with AVID coordinator/teacher to assume a shared responsibility for the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
Commitment
  • Approximately 5-20 hours per week, September-May (excluding GCISD holidays and breaks)
