The Nursing Associate is a key member of the multidisciplinary team within the GP Practice, delivering high-quality, person-centred care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or GP.

Therole bridges the gap between a Healthcare Assistant and a Registered Nurse,contributing to clinical care, health promotion, chronic disease management,immunisation programmes, and practice-wide quality improvement initiatives. The Nursing Associate works within their scope of practice in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code.

Main duties of the job

The Nursing Associate will:

  • Undertake andrecord clinical observations including blood pressure, pulse, temperature,oxygen saturation, height, weight, BMI and urinalysis.
  • Performvenepuncture, capillary blood sampling and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Carry outECGs.
  • Deliver woundcare including dressings, suture removal and basic wound assessment.
  • Administer injections as delegated and within scope of practice.
  • Support chronic disease monitoring (e.g. asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension) under supervision.
  • Support patients with long-term conditions, including those with complex needssuch as dementia and mental health conditions.
  • Undertake NHSHealth Checks.
  • Carry out cervical cytology (if trained and competent).
  • Administer vaccinations and immunisations under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) or Patient Specific Directions (PSDs), including childhood immunisations (if appropriately trained and assessed as competent).
  • Undertake home visits for housebound patients for annual reviews, vaccinations and monitoring as delegated.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to deteriorating patients or safeguarding concerns.
