There is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic Practice Nurse wanting to join our growing GP Practice and work with our friendly and supportive team.
Ideally, we are looking for someone to work between 30 and 37.5 hours per week over 4 to 5 days (Monday to Friday).
About usThe practice operates across two sites and has a patient list of about 14,000 with 4 Partners and 3 salaried GPs. The Practice achieved a Good rating in all 5 service questions in our most recent CQC inspection (September 2017). We are a training practice and usually host at least two trainees and offer a number of enhanced services. Pelham Road Surgery is located a 2 minute walk from Gravesend Train Station with excellent fast train links to London, Ebbsfleet International (Eurostar) and Bluewater.
Both surgeries also benefit from ample free parking which is available to all staff and patients.
As a Practice Nurse at Pelham Medical Practice the successful candidate will work as a senior member of our multidisciplinary team ensuring that our nursing services are delivered safely and effectively to our patients across both our surgeries. You will be responsible for the management of patients with long‑term conditions using evidence‑based practice including care for the elderly and housebound.
Main duties of the job- Provide personal medical services to patients of the practice.
- Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs.

- Removal of Sutures
- Adult and General Health Checks
- Learning Disability Health Checks
- Urinalysis
- Travel Clinic
- ECGs
- INR Testing
- Asthma‑Peak Flow Readings/Spirometry
- Venepuncture – bloods
- Ear syringing
- Routine immunisations (including childhood)
- Chaperoning and assisting patients being examined by another clinician
- Assisting GPs with minor surgery, coil fittings and pill checks
- Manage and participate in Asthma & COPD Clinics;
Diabetic Clinics; and request pathology tests such as urine culture and swabs. - Follow agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate.
- Assist and take the lead, where appropriate, in ensuring the Practice maintains and improves Infection Control standards.
- Maintain and clean equipment used by nurses and GPs, including updating cleaning schedules.
- Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms, and manage stock as required.
- Order health promotion literature and vaccinations to maintain stock levels.
- Participate in administrative systems and Practice meetings when required.
- On occasion, undertake home visits and any other delegated duties appropriate to the post.
- Implement and lead the full range of promotion and management of health and safety and infection control within the Practice.
- Use personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines.
- Aware of national standards of infection control and regulatory requirements, and good practice guidelines.
- Ensure correct and safe management of specimen processes including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct containers, storage and transport arrangements.
- Maintain and order Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure its correct usage by staff.
- Promote hand hygiene across the practice.
- Own infection control and clinically based patient care protocols, implementing these across the practice.
- Observe and identify current working practices, identifying weaknesses or training needs and escalating issues appropriately.
- Manage and mitigate risks involved in work activities through effective training and supervision.
- Monitor practice facilities and equipment for infection control, ensuring sufficient hand cleansing facilities and other supplies.
- Safely manage sharps procedures including training, use, storage and disposal.
- Maintain work areas in a tidy, clean, sterile and safe manner, identifying and correcting hazards and risks.
- Complete periodic infection control training at least twice annually.
- Maintain general standards of cleanliness across all business areas in consultation with other senior managers.
- NMC Registered Nurse.
- Educated to Degree Level.
- Diploma Level or equivalent in Respiratory or another specialisation.
- Experience in the above areas.
