Position Title
Trainee Biomedical Scientist / Specialist Biomedical Scientist
Salary & BandingBand 5: £33,247–£41,424 / Band 6: £41,608–£50,702
LocationDr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin – Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences
Hours37 hours per week (as of 1/4/26 the Agenda for Change full‑time week reduces from 37 to 36 hours, with a corresponding hourly rate increase)
Qualifications- HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry, OR
- Graduates with an Applied Biomedical Science (Hons) degree, or a Biomedical Sciences (Hons) degree accredited by IBMS suitable for training
Newly graduated candidates: placed on Band 5, required to complete Specialist Portfolio prior to progression to Band 6.
Qualified & experienced HCPC registered BMS placed at Band 6.
Candidates with >1 year HCPC‑registered BMS experience must meet Band 6 person specification (not considered trainee).
Responsibilities & ServicesThe Department is a multidisciplinary laboratory, accepted by MHRA for compliance with Blood Safety and Quality Regulations, providing Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, limited Microbiology and Blood Transfusion services to Dr Gray’s Hospital. It is a satellite of the main Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology laboratories at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, both holding full UKAS accreditation.
Successful candidates are expected to participate in the Continuous Processing Shift system, which is EWTD compliant and offers suitable remuneration.
The Department is approved by IBMS/HCPC as a training laboratory and is UKAS accredited. Participation in CPD activities is encouraged, with funding for further postgraduate study available.
