Job summary

The postholder will be responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of Shingles, RSV, Pneumococcal, COVID-19, seasonal Influenza vaccinations and any other vaccinations which becomes part of the NHS schedule to registered patients, both in patients home and within the practice setting. The postholder will assess suitability for vaccination, obtain informed consent, administer vaccines in accordance with current clinical guidance, maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with the wider clinical team.

Where necessary arrange follow up for specific vaccinations.

This role will be supported by a vaccine coordinator.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be responsible for the safe and effective delivery of vaccines to patients in surgeries and in their homes.

When vaccinating housebound patients, you will be required to collect and transport the vaccine, assess the clinical appropriateness of vaccination, administer the vaccine in accordance with a Patient Group Directive, and use Systm One to record your work.

You will work closely with our GP practices and administrative teams, and you will receive statutory and mandatory training as required.

You must be a confident practitioner, skilled in working with frail patients, and capable of managing your workload independently in a community setting.

  • Delivery of vaccination programmes in patients homes and in the practice setting
  • Safe collection, transportation and storage of vaccines while maintaining cold chain requirements.
  • Assessment of housebound patients' suitability for vaccination.
  • Administration of vaccinations in accordance with Patient Group Directions (PGDs), National Protocols or other approved frameworks.
  • Timely and accurate recording of vaccination activity.
  • Maintaining effective communication with practice.
  • Ensuring patient safety, confidentiality and professional standards always.
Main Duties, Outline Responsibilities and Work Portfolio Patient/Client Care and Support
  • Assist practices with the administration of vaccinations for their patient populations within surgeries and patients' homes.
  • Assess patients for clinical suitability prior to vaccination.
  • Obtain informed consent before administering vaccines.
  • Deliver vaccinations safely and effectively in line with current clinical guidance.
  • Manage and respond appropriately to adverse reactions, including anaphylaxis.
  • Provide advice and reassurance to patients and carers regarding vaccinations.
Leadership and Workforce
  • Work independently while maintaining strong communication with the wider clinical team.
  • Work closely with the vaccinator coordinator to support identification of patient cohorts/ organising clinics/ arranging visit in demographic order
  • Support the delivery of PCN vaccination programmes.
  • Maintain professional registration and competency requirements.
  • Participate in supervision, training and appraisal processes.
Financial, budgetary and contract management
  • Ensure appropriate use of vaccines, equipment and consumables.
  • Minimise wastage through effective stock handling and cold chain management
Organisational Policy
  • Adhere to ENMP policies and procedures and all relevant legislation.
  • Comply with professional standards and codes of conduct.
  • Complete and maintain mandatory training requirements.
Task management (including work related planning)
  • Manage daily workload efficiently and effectively.
