All About General Merchandise

The General Merchandise (GM) team manages product set, pricing, merchandising, and availability on the sales floor. It leads inbound, outbound, and replenishment processes for all GM areas, maintains inventory accuracy, and supports food & beverage and food service operations. Our team also handles pick, pack, and ship fulfillment.

Responsibilities
  • Execute daily/weekly workload to meet department and store sales goals and guest engagement, including merchandising, pricing, set‑up, displays, sampling, promotions, and price changes.
  • Educate team members on operational procedures and how they impact inventory, profitability, and product availability.
  • Assist in assessment of GM processes and develop action plans for improvement.
  • Own accuracy, process, and efficiency across all GM functions.
  • Lead daily product receipt, shelf restocking, back‑room organization, merchandise arrangement, and promotional signage.
  • Support inventory accuracy, merchandising set‑up, and pricing for all store areas.
  • Assign daily tasks to team members based on workload and guest traffic, aligning with weekly and monthly business priorities.
  • Help establish clear goals, set expectations, and hold team members accountable.
  • Assist with pick, pack, and ship fulfillment, identify gaps, and develop improvement plans.
  • Collaborate with all teams and leaders, including closing, to ensure the store is guest‑ready.
  • Stay informed on relevant trends and products, communicating Target updates to team members during connection moments.
  • Evaluate candidates for open positions and build a guest‑centric team under the guidance of your leader.
  • Work a schedule that aligns with guest and business needs, including early morning, evening, overnight, and weekend shifts.
  • Support guest services such as backup cashier, digital fulfillment, and compliance with beverage laws.
  • Demonstrate inclusivity, authenticity, respect, and equity in all interactions.
  • Promote safety culture by modeling safe behaviors, identifying hazards, holding people accountable, and responding to incidents.
  • Execute physical security processes to enhance in‑store security culture.
  • Support merchandise protection strategies across the store, including ordering, storage, and application as directed.
  • Welcome guests and engage them with a helpful attitude, offering assistance and expressing gratitude for choosing Target.
  • Follow safe and secure training and processes as a key carrier (if applicable).
  • Address all store emergency and compliance needs.
  • Perform all other duties as directed by business needs.
