During each visit, the home visitor role plays an activity packet with the parent, which the parent then completes with their child throughout the week. Families also are invited to participate in a monthly group meeting with other families. HIPPYCorps members: meet with families one-on-one, in the home, on a weekly basis, scheduling visits at times convenient for each family. Visits generally last one hour and include an entrance process (reconnecting with the family, providing children with an activity while the Ameri Corps member works with the parent, reviewing progress on the previous week's curriculum, and gathering data on child and parent progress), a role play (including member modeling of parent-child interaction activities with the parent), and an exit process (including follow-up instruction, confirmation of upcoming activities, and other parenting resources).
In addition, program provides ongoing career development assistance to help members to transition to other work after they have completed their hours of service in Ameri Corps. Upon completion of those hours and all other program requirements, HIPPYCorps members are eligible to receive an Education Award that can be used for a variety of educational costs, including attending college or paying back existing student loans.
Note to applicants:
This program recruits primarily from the target parent population served and is designed to give opportunities to parents from local communities who may benefit from the professional and educational opportunities both the HIPPY and Ameri Corps programs provide.
