The Criminalist works with law enforcement officials to uncover facts and evidence in criminal cases. Responsibilities include conducting interviews, reviewing evidence, and analyzing data. The successful candidate must know how to prepare reports and present cases to prosecutors. The Criminalist must also be able to communicate effectively with other agencies and personnel.
The Criminalist is vital to the success of the Greeley Police Department and provides specialized investigative support which allows GPD to spend more time providing proactive policing services to the public. This position is a non-sworn equivalent to a Detective in the Investigations Unit. The Criminalist will work on a specific team with a primary focus on that team’s mission (Internet Crimes Against Children – ICAC, Crimes Against Persons, Fraud/Cyber Crime, Gang Crime, or Property Crimes).
This position will initially be assigned to the ICAC investigations section and will conduct investigations of internet-facilitated crimes against children.
Minimum Requirements
- Two (2) – Four (4) years’ experience in law enforcement, investigations, or intelligence operations
- Two (2) – Four (4) years’ experience handling and maintaining chain of custody and integrity of the evidence
- Valid driver’s license with good driving history
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Preferred
- Bilingual in Spanish and English, highly desired
- Associate degree in criminal justice or a related field or POST Certified;
Bachelor’s degree preferred - Prior investigative experience in persons crimes
- Experience investigating Internet-facilitated crimes against children
- Experience in the execution of search warrants
- Experience with forensic examination of digital media
- Experience with victim and suspect interviews
- Experience with evidence preservation
- Experience in providing testimony in court
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of laws, judicial procedures, regulations, rules, and guidelines related to crime and evidence
- Excellent investigative and analytical skills
- Ability to conduct interviews, collect evidence, and prepare reports
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to handle and maintain chain of custody and integrity of the evidence
- Ability to identify and seek needed information
- Organized and detail-oriented
- Conducts proactive and reactive Internet crimes against children investigations, including online chat rooms, social media applications, websites, and NCMEC Cybertips
- Prepares, coordinates, and executes search warrants for content and physical locations
- Investigates complex criminal activities or local, federal, or state law violations
- Gathers and verifies evidence through interviews and observation of suspects and witnesses or by reviewing and analyzing records and logs
- Analyzes and interprets data, documents, and records to uncover evidence
- Examines items of evidence to discover, preserve, identify, and collect evidence
- Identifies scope, timing, and direction of investigations and justifies changes based on findings
- Compiles and reports detailed investigative findings
- Completes search and arrest warrants affidavits
- Provides court testimony regarding observations and determinations of criminal activity
