Position Summary
The Institution Physician is responsible for providing professional primary‑care medical services to persons in our care. The Primary Care Physician diagnoses and treats illness and injuries, arranges for professional consultation when warranted, develops individual plans of care, performs both chronic and acute care visits, and assists with medical emergencies. This position participates in multidisciplinary care team meetings, quality improvement initiatives, day and evening on‑call rotation, and other units during vacations, illness, or emergencies as directed by the Bureau.
SalaryInformation
This position is in pay schedule 10‑51 with pay starting from $96.64/hour to $120.80/hour. Board‑certified physicians may earn supplemental pay of up to $21.00/hour (maximum effective wage $135.98/hour, $282,838/year); those not yet certified may earn up to $7.00/hour (maximum effective wage $121.98/hour, $253,718/year). Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire.
A twelve‑month probationary period is required.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (citizen, lawful permanent resident, or alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting and may be required to pass a pre‑employment drug screen.
This position is not eligible for remote work.
Shift: 0.7 FTE. Days of the week will be determined upon hire.
Qualifications- Current, unrestricted/unlimited license to practice medicine in the State of Wisconsin.
- Current DEA number.
- Education or training in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or another area of primary care.
- Enrollment or eligibility for enrollment in Wisconsin Medicaid.
