Responsibilities
  • Assist with recruiting and training volunteers for zoo events and daily operations.
  • Manage online volunteer sign‑up sheets and create/update training materials as needed.
  • Maintain volunteer department policies, procedures, and records to comply with Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards.
  • Perform background checks and interviews; process all paperwork and records related to volunteer recruitment and retention.
  • Assist with recruitment and coordination of zoo internship programs.
  • Conduct volunteer orientations and trainings.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records of volunteer services and program.
  • Serve as a liaison between volunteers and zoo staff members.
  • Utilize social media, face‑to‑face communication, telephone, and email to maintain communication with volunteers.
  • Ensure appropriate support for volunteers.
  • Work with the Education & Volunteer Programs Coordinator to coordinate volunteer meetings and projects, ensuring adequate volunteer coverage for daily operations and events.
  • Edit and publish the Zoo Volunteer monthly and annual reports; write and distribute press releases focusing on volunteer‑driven activities and events.
  • Perform related functions as assigned (non‑essential duties).
Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience in volunteer management.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate events.
  • Proficiency with computers and required software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, zoo staff, members of the public, and zoo visitors/customers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Team‑orientated and able to work cohesively with others.
  • Ability to work the required hours of the position.
