Program DescriptionThe NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly‑talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA‑affiliated research institute. These fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
NASA is developing the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (formerly WFIRST), scheduled for launch in the mid‑2020s. Roman will be an astronomical observatory optimized for wide‑area and time‑domain surveys in the near‑infrared (0.5–2.3 µm). Science objectives include studying the accelerating expansion of the universe and large‑scale structure, exoplanet demographics, and near‑infrared surveys of the sky, with a coronagraph instrument for imaging exoplanets and debris disks.
The Goddard Space Flight Center is involved in the design and science of the Roman observatory. Relevant research includes:
- Theoretical or observational studies of dark energy via supernovae, weak lensing, baryon acoustic oscillations, cluster surveys, etc.
- Studies of exoplanet detection and investigation via microlensing, transit techniques, coronagraphy.
- Analysis of the near‑infrared survey for other astrophysics topics from Solar System to Cosmic Dawn.
- Instrumentation studies such as optics, detectors, precision calibration, and coronagraphy.
