The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) is a leader in historic preservation and manages several historic sites, museums, and programs that interpret Prince George's County's rich history. The Natural and Historic Resources Division (NHRD), oversees 22 historic sites that are open to the public, including the Ridgeley Rosenwald School Museum.
The Ridgeley Rosenwald School opened in 1927 as Colored School No. 1 in Election District 13 for students in the Black community of Ridgeley with seed money provided by the Julius Rosenwald Fund. During the 1950s, the school began operating as a Special Education Center. From 1963 to 2009, it functioned as a bus depot and administrative building for the Prince George’s County Board of Education.
Today, the site serves as a museum and programmatic space that is operated in partnership with the Prince George’s County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It is one of four historic sites managed by the M-NCPPC Black History Program (BHP) within NHRD. BHP is a countywide network of historic sites and museums, educational programs and celebrations, and community-based initiatives focused on preserving and honoring black history and culture.
The Ridgeley Rosenwald School Museum focuses on connecting themes like education, historic preservation, self-determination/community, civil rights activism, and leadership through the unique and evolving history of this African American site over the course of the 20th century. Current work at this site has focused on expanding the museum’s traditional interpretation to reflect these additional themes, offering a more balanced and inclusive tour and schedule of programs that draw from the long and varied history of the property.
The successful candidate will have expertise in the fields of African American history and/or Maryland history. The candidate should also have demonstrable knowledge and experience in historic facility management, public programming, budget and staff supervision, traditional and online marketing, and community engagement. The work schedule includes occasional weekends and evenings. The museum is currently open to the public Thursday through Saturday, 10 am – 2pm.
This candidate will support NHRD in upholding its four strategic pillars:
Experience:
Quality and Quantity.
Transforming Education into Activism.
