DescriptionThe NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talent scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.
Responsibilities:
- Analyze data from calorimeter and grating instruments for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic observations of astrophysical objects.
- Provide high-quality atomic data and an understanding of its limitations through joint theory development and laboratory benchmark experiments.
- Participate in laboratory astrophysics collaborations to provide data for interpretation of observations by Chandra, XMM, and future missions (XRISM, Athena, Arcus, Lynx).
- Deploy high-resolution X-ray calorimeter arrays, measure transition energies, oscillator strengths, and electron impact excitation cross sections.
- Archive and publicize atomic data, and collaborate on astrophysical modeling utilizing this data.
- Carry out a targeted program of atomic physics calculations.
- Doctoral Degree in Astrophysics, Physics, or related field.
- Strong background in X-ray spectroscopy and atomic data.
- Experience with high-resolution calorimeter arrays and laboratory astrophysics collaboration.
