Description

The NASA Postdoctoral Program (NPP) offers unique research opportunities to highly-talented scientists to engage in ongoing NASA research projects at a NASA Center, NASA Headquarters, or at a NASA-affiliated research institute. These one- to three-year fellowships are competitive and are designed to advance NASA’s missions in space science, Earth science, aeronautics, space operations, exploration systems, and astrobiology.

Accurate knowledge of the state of the corona and solar wind is critical for reliably modeling and forecasting geomagnetic disturbance events days in advance. These events are produced by high-speed streams emerging from coronal holes and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs). Individuals interested in working with coronal and solar wind models and/or the input data used to drive them are highly encouraged to apply for this opportunity.

The modeling side of this work will involve using simple physics and empirical-based models, or advanced numerical models such as magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) codes. The data aspect involves working with a variety of ground and space-based solar disk observations, as well as in-situ data from multiple spacecraft.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Improving the identification of coronal holes in solar disk observations for model validation and forecasting.
  • Handling and assimilating data from multiple solar observatories to create global magnetic field maps.
  • Applying rigorous data assimilation techniques and magnetic field evolution models.
  • Using models to predict solar coronal and solar wind conditions.
Qualifications
  • Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in physics, applied mathematics, computer science, or related field.
  • Experience with physics-based or data-driven modeling and numerical simulation.
  • Familiarity with magneto hydrodynamic (MHD) codes is a plus.
  • Strong background in handling observational data and data assimilation.
