Role Overview

As a Fleet Mechanic, you will be responsible for minor and major repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment vehicles (e.g., dump trucks), light vehicles, and tools. You will diagnose and resolve problems in compliance with current procedures and safety practices. You may assist in major repairs of gasoline or diesel engines, and repair difficult and complex automotive problems (e.g., replacement or repair of brake systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, medium and heavy-duty hydraulic systems).

Fleet Mechanics are responsible for providing their tools to complete the outlined job duties.

Key responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment, light, and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using diagnostic tools and manuals.
  • Inspect and test equipment and vehicles for safety and functionality.
Skills and qualifications
  • Proficiency with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills.
Mechanic Positions

Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.

INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full-time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items.

This position is located in INDOT’s Greenfield District, Mount Comfort Area.

Salary

This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

A Day in the Life

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Rebuild, replace, and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air, and hydraulic brakes).
  • Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components).
  • Perform minor body repair work.
  • Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or pick up parts.
  • Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal.
  • Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them.
  • Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage.
  • Operate tow truck, or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpen blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same.
  • Perform service calls on the roadside when equipment is disabled.
